Rabbit Cage
A Rabbit cage is one of the main things you need when you consider to buy a Rabbit as a family companion. Both wild and domesticated Rabbits are solitary and territorial animals. They need their own home ranges or cages. In an outdoor hutch, several rabbits may be kept, if they have enough room. A male and female can be kept together only if the owner wants to breed them. After mating, the male should be separated from the female to let her give birth and nurse the babies. Rabbit males are often aggressive to bunnies.
A Rabbit cage should be spacious enough for the animal to stretch out and stand up on the hind legs. The cage should be easy to clean and resistant to chewing. A wire metal cage with a removable tray is the best choice for Rabbit owners. An opportunity to hide is very important for rabbits, as in the wild, they prefer dense vegetation where they are safe. The bedding should be made of straw or wood shavings. A litter box should be placed in the cage and cleaned regularly. Rabbits are normally easy to housebreak.
A Rabbit cage can be kept both inside and outside. When indoors, keep the cage in a warm, well ventilated area. When kept outdoors let the Rabbit an opportunity to hide from direct sunlight, rain, and cold. A cage should be secure from predators, such as dogs, cats, and birds of prey. Drafts and overheating are very dangerous for Rabbits. When it’s hot, put a plastic bottle filled with frozen water in the cage.
Rabbits should not be always confined to the cage. They need exercise to keep fit and healthy. To give your Rabbit an opportunity to exercise, make a cage that opens to a secure exercise area. Never let a Rabbit run freely in the yard. These small animals are real escape artists. After running away, they are unlikely to find the way back. These animals like to chew on everything and can easily get into trouble if allowed to play in the yard. A Rabbit cage should have enough chewing material.
