Early Rabbit breeders in America raised these animals because they were highly prolific and could be used for meat and for their pelts. Today, rabbits are still used for commercial purposes, but there appeared many rabbit breeds that are kept as pets only. Purebred Rabbits can compete in special competitions. They occur in various sizes from 2 to 20 pounds and come in a variety of coat types and colors. Pet rabbits are cute and charming. Properly tamed, Rabbits are very interactive and playful. They make good pets for families with older children, but young kids should not be allowed to handle these little creatures.

Prior to looking for Rabbit breeders, you have to decide what type of a rabbit you need. Though these creatures are quieter and easier to maintain than show quality dogs or cats, they have specific care requirements. The main thing Rabbits need is a large cage or an enclosure where they can play. Rabbits are solitary and territorial by nature. Two or more males should not be kept in one cage. A male and a female can be kept together only for breeding. After breeding, the male should be removed from the cage to let the female give birth and nurse her bunnies.

Rabbit breeders are always ready to help novice Rabbit owners with advice, but a perspective Rabbit owner should be informed about basic needs of these animals. Domestic Rabbits should be fed fresh grass or hay with supplements of fresh vegetables and fruits. Don’t give your pet Rabbit pellets designed for commercial use. They are rich in protein and help increase the body mass rapidly, which is unnecessary in pet animals.

Wild Rabbits cannot make good pets. Even a young bunny taken home from the wild is unlikely to bond with the family. If you find an orphaned sick and helpless bunny in the wild, you can take it home for several days and release back into the wild. At the age of 6-7 weeks Rabbits become independent and able to take care of themselves. Rabbit breeders never use wild animals as breeding stock, but choose purebred males and females for producing high quality bunnies for sale.
