Cottontail Rabbit Pictures

In Cottontail Rabbit pictures, you’ll probably see an animal of the genus Sylvilagus. These creatures occur in a wild and domesticated form. Cottontail Rabbits are typical in the Americas. There are 16 species and a large number of subspecies of the Cottontail Rabbit. Most species are confined to particular areas; a few species are widely distributed.

The Eastern Cottontail is the most widely spread species in the USA. In Cottontail Rabbit pictures, these animals are usually portrayed. Cottontail Rabbits are red-brown or gray-brown with white undercoat. They have long ears, large brown eyes, large hind feet, and white cotton-like tail. Cottontail Rabbits differ from hares by a brownish-gray coloration of the head and neck, lighter coat of the body, and white underside of the tail.

In the wild, Cottontail Rabbit pictures can be taken throughout the USA in bushy areas, woodlands, swamps, thickets, and sometimes in open lands. This animal is an herbivore. It feeds on a variety of vegetation from grasses to fruits and vegetables. In the winter, Cottontail Rabbit thrives on twigs and bark of various trees. Cottontail Rabbits are active at night and rarely come out into the open, so it’s difficult to notice them in the wild.

The Cottontail Rabbit leads a solitary life, except for the breeding season when males and females perform a mating dance and chase each other. Mating season occurs between February and September. About a month after mating a female gives birth to one to nine babies. In Cottontail Rabbit pictures, the kittens look small and helpless, but they grow rapidly and are weaned at about 3 weeks of age. At seven weeks of age, the babies leave the mother and she may have another litter. Normally, Cottontail Rabbit females have 3-4 litters a year. Females are sexually mature at about 3 months old.

The reproductive rate of the Cottontail Rabbit is very high. In spite of hunting and predation, this species remains common in most parts of its habitat. A typical lifespan of the Cottontail Rabbit is 2-3 years; many are killed in their first year. These animals are popular pets. In many Cottontail Rabbit pictures, you can see fluffy and cute family companions.
